ASPIRA South Youth Leadership
Charter School
The ASPIRA South Youth Leadership Charter School is
a middle school (grades 6-8) located in the multi-ethnic community
of Leisure City, Florida, near Homestead. The school population
consists of 180 students (whom we call "ASPIRANTES")
from this predominantly low-income community, including a large
migrant population. Ninety-four percent of our students receive
free or reduced-price lunch, and a majority speak a language
other than English in their homes.
Our
mission is to motivate, orient, and assist these ASPIRANTES in
their intellectual, personal, and cultural development through
innovative educational programs. We advocate a holistic approach,
which implies that schools, parents, youth, and community must
work together to bring about positive results.
The main component of the ASPIRA SouthYouth
Leadership Charter School is, of course, leadership development.
Our goals are to help young people realize positive self-worth,
gain cultural sensitivity, and build strong moral character.
We provide a safe, disciplined environment, high academic standards
and social interactions that prepare them for higher education
and help them reach their full potential as role models and leaders.
To help them learn and understand
leadership, we expose them to various styles, or models, of governance
through classroom experiences, clubs and extracurricular activities.
ASPIRANTES have a variety of opportunities to participate in
leadership, free from judgment. ASPIRA SouthYouth Leadership
Charter School provides opportunities for them to plan, budget,
organize and execute programs and projects of interest to them
and their peers. We offer a safe environment for them to practice
and polish their leadership skills through trial-and-error, under
the direction of caring adults, and strive to equip them with
the tools for self-evaluation and self-correction.
