The
Family Enrichment Program
consists of many family activities. Throughout the year we organize
picnics, dinners, family outings and a Family Forum. In addition, we
offer a series of eight (8) workshops available both in English and
Spanish.
Our curriculum is based on Guiding Good Choices, a
program developed and sponsored by the Commission of Substance Abuse.
Additionally, ASPIRA Florida, Inc., through questionnaires, research
conducted, and years of experience has identified many other issues,
besides drug usage, that have become or can become problem behaviors;
therefore, we have developed a complementary curriculum to cover factors
like violence, school drop-out, teen pregnancy, gang involvement, family
communication and others. The goal is to strengthen family bonds and to
make the parents, especially those with children between the ages of 9
and 18, aware of those risks and to give them tools to help them deal
with issues like these.
We also ask the participating parents to come up with
different topics that they feel it could be of interest to them, and try
to incorporate some of the information requested within our curriculum.
The workshops have a length of two (2) hours each
night for eight sessions. They alternate from week to week between
English and Spanish.
These classes have been proven to be a very effective
prevention program. It has also been found to produce a significant
improvement in parenting skills and parent-child relationships. Most
importantly, studies have shown that children of parents who attended
these workshops reported less alcohol and marijuana use than children of
parents who had not attended the workshops. That is why we urge every
parent, whether their children are enrolled in any of the ASPIRA
programs or not, to take advantage of this opportunity.
We know that it will make a difference. Please join
us. Our classes are on Mondays from 6:30-8:30pm at the Memorial Hospital
Pembroke located at 7800 Sheridan Street, 3rd Floor, Room 366, Pembroke
Pines, Florida 33026.
